«Volkswagen» переводится с немецкого языка как «народный автомобиль». Первая партия автомобилей, выпущенная на заре становления компании, составляла всего 12 штук. Во время нацизма логотип компании был изменен и стилизован под свастику.

A drop down menu will appear. It's a great freeway machine--quiet, smooth, fast, and composed. Having driven an identical car equipped with VW's excellent five-speed Tiptronic automatic, even one self-declared stick-and-clutch guy said the W8 would indeed be best ordered with the Tip instead. It looked good, handled nicely, and served well as a smart -priced alternative to some of the costlier German brands.

Volkswagen 's popular midsizer remained a strong seller since its last major remodel for the model year. It looked good, handled nicely, and served well as a smart -priced alternative to some of the costlier German brands. Now, the Passat would have power, too--and not just from a turbo option, but via a revolutionary new engine architecture based on a "W" instead of a "V.

Sport suspension and a six-speed stick? Sounded like a bargain-priced alternative to a i Sport or A6 4. We, among others, were excited about what the Passat W8 promised. Put us down for 12 months' worth. Some staffers felt it a good value, as the Passat W8 was the least expensive eight-cylinder German sport sedan--by a lot--on the market at the time.

The main reason we wanted to subject this model to a year's flogging was to see what the much-ballyhooed W8 engine was all about and what sort of service experience--or maintenance headache--it would deliver.

Its horsepower rating wasn't a lot for a 4. And the W8 wasn't long on torque, either, but it was butter smooth, offered plenty of punch in the tach's low and middle ranges, and proved reliable. The muted burble out of its four exhaust pipes sounded rich and expensive. So much for engine issues, at least during the car's tenure here. The six-speed manual trans was less popular.

Most editors felt its gear ratios weren't right: First was short, and second a bit too tall to use in its place for a smooth takeoff, although all was well once underway. Deft matching of throttle and clutch operation was required to avoid a lurch or stall, but the shifter felt crisp and direct when rowing through the extended H pattern.

Having driven an identical car equipped with VW's excellent five-speed Tiptronic automatic, even one self-declared stick-and-clutch guy said the W8 would indeed be best ordered with the Tip instead. It was offered as a no-cost, buyer's-choice option.

As the W8 was a premium offering, 4Motion all-wheel drive was standard. While we're not sure it made the car handle any better in terms of real-world grip or cornering prowess, it eliminated any notion of torque steer--justification enough in our book. Most horse front-drivers will have the steering wheel dancing in your hands even at part-throttle, but this wasn't an issue in the W8.

It was the very definition of neutral and easy to drive with precision. Although our tester resembled base Passats costing just over half as much, there was little quibble with its styling or appearance. The inch sport wheels do a lot for it, as does the dark blue metallic hue" was one editor's comment. There's a lot in that last statement, as the non-Sport model has inch rolling stock, and it looks even more like a four-cylinder model.

Our only gripe with the wheels is that the lip of the rim stands proud of the tire, which means metal, not rubber, is the first thing that indicated a parallel parker was too close to the curb. VW also produced the W8 in station-wagon form, a nifty and practical alternative. The W8 interior shared the same architecture as other Passats, but received upgraded leather and wood trim, a few splashes of chrome, nicer leather, and automatic climate control.
